Headington Prep School

Academic rigour for girls from 3-11 who enjoy state-of-the-art facilities in art, drama, music and sport

Offers an extended day from 7.45am to 5.45pm

As Headington Prep School celebrates its Centenary,

the focus is very much on the future. The School provides academic rigour for girls from 3-11 who flourish in the School’s friendly and supportive environment and enjoy state-of-the-art facilities in art, drama, music and sport.

Stretch and Challenge

Academic standards at Headington are consistently high. Girls start to learn to read and write in the Nursery and our Stretch and Challenge programme ensures that the most gifted girls are encouraged and challenged.

We also give extra support to those who may need it as they go through the School. As a consequence, a very high proportion of girls leave in Year 6 with a reading age significantly ahead of the average levels.

Direct entry to the Senior School

With a high percentage of girls consistently winning scholarships to top independent schools – not only academic but also drama, music and sport – together with effective assessment and monitoring of the girls’ progress as they move through the Prep School, in 2014 the Governors took the important decision to remove the 11+ exam for Prep School girls.

With competition for places at the Senior School higher than ever and more than 90% of Prep girls taking up places there, this is a significant endorsement of teaching standards in the Prep School.

The move has been welcomed by parents, teachers and of course the girls themselves and allows more time to explore new topics and ensure that the girls have every advantage when they move on to the next stage of their education at the end of Year 6.

State-of-the-art facilities

A multi-million pound building project, completed in the autumn of 2013, has brought a wide range of facilities to the Prep School including:

• Fantasy-themed dining room

• 300-seater Theatre with retractable seating

• Music teaching and practice rooms

• Purpose-built fully-equipped Art Room

• A new library

• Large airy Reception Area and Upper Atrium

The School also has a science laboratory and full use of the 25m swimming pool and all-weather pitches at the Senior School. A state-of-the-art Dance and Fitness Centre is due to open in May 2015.

Extended day

Headington Prep School offers an extended day from 7.45 am to 5.45 pm. This flexible approach helps parents juggle work and school and also enables us to offer a wide range of clubs – over forty per week – from Fencing, Orchestra and Ballet to Code Club, Chess and Debating. Girls are encouraged to try new activities and take risks, discovering new passions and talents and developing existing skills.

Forest School

With its own area of woodland and 23 acres to explore over the road at the Senior School, Headington Prep School follows the Forest School Association guidelines led by fully trained experts and girls in EYFS enjoy weekly sessions learning through the outdoor environment.
