Official Opening of the Beachborough’s TED Centre
"A cutting-edge design and exciting environment for children to enjoy working in"
Beachborough School’s new Technology, Engineering and Design (TED) centre was officially opened on Friday 12 January by Mr Aldo Costa, engineering director of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team.
Aldo Costa has played a central role in winning 12 Formula One World Constructors’ Championship titles and is a veteran of 30 years in the sport.
The evening started with an introduction from Beachborough’s chair of the governors, Sue Barrett and headmaster, Jeremy Banks, on how Beachborough’s recognition of the remarkable impact design and technology has on our daily lives led to the desire to build a state of the art facility, to inspire children to embrace this fast-moving world with confidence.
Jeremy explained, “Despite their young age, Beachborough pupils will be taught the skills familiar to those who work in technology, engineering and design, as it is our ambition that in addition to enjoying exam success, these children will catch the eye of future employees and go on to enjoy careers in these exciting industries. TED will go way beyond the national curriculum and open children’s eyes to opportunities such as electronics, robotics, coding, 3D printing, laser cutting, printed circuit boards and computer-aided design.”
More than 70 VIP guests from local engineering and technology companies were treated to a series of demonstrations, all presented by Beachborough pupils. The school has been delighted with the response from many of the local companies to engage in future partnerships. By inspiring the next generation, Beachborough hope that opportunities such as talks and visits to see TED in action in the real world will truly light up a pathway to careers in engineering, design and technology.
Guests and pupils were fascinated to hear architect Martin Smart, speak about the challenge of designing a state of the art building in a traditional setting such as Beachborough’s manor house. The stunning result speaks for itself – a cutting-edge design and exciting environment for children to enjoy working in, which is also fit for purpose. The balance of design and engineering led very neatly on to special guest Aldo Costa’s inspiring speech, before the all-important ribbon cutting. Aldo captivated the audience with stories from his early passion to work in F1, through his days at Ferrari, to the challenges he faces at Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport in Brackley as engineering director. A key message in Aldo’s speech was the importance of inspirational teachers at an early age, and the hard work involved in achieving your dream – values important to Beachborough and their new TED centre.
Finally, the evening concluded with the moment Beachborough’s Year 8 TED Ambassadors had been excitedly waiting for, assisting Aldo with cutting the yellow ribbon to officially open the new TED Centre. The evening was a wonderful celebration of this outstanding new facility, and Beachborough would like to thank everyone involved, for such an inspiring event.
