"Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion..."

Cheek by Jowl has performed in over 400 cities in more than 40 countries, spanning six continents and has received numerous international awards.

The Playhouse is one of the few lucky theatres in the UK who get to host this widely renowned company on the UK leg of its international tour of The Winter’s Tale.

One of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, the action ranges across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years. The Winter's Tale tells of a delusional and paranoid king who tears his family apart.

But this is the new Shakespeare, after he completed his great tragedies, and the tough struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion...

Directed by three-time Olivier award-winner and founder of Cheek by Jowl, Declan Donnellan, winner of the Golden Lion of Venice for Lifetime Achievement award in 2016, it is designed by co-founder Nick Ormerod. Orlando James, who has previously played Shakespeare himself in the West End production of Shakespeare in Love, takes on the lead role of Leontes. One of the only chances to catch this production in the UK, this visually stunning show is an absolute must-see.

Tickets for The Winter’s Tale at Oxford Playhouse start at £11.50 and are available from the Ticket Office on 01865 305305 or book online.
