"Rules are nothing"

Pippa Paton Design has been twice recognised in the prestigious Andrew Martin International Interior Design Review, the ‘bible’ of the interior design world.

Their speciality is creating fabulous bespoke interior and exterior living spaces in the Cotswolds and London, and they are particularly experienced in the renovation of period and listed properties.

Pippa and Scott Paton personally lead every project from inception through to ultimate perfection, with support from their talented team of professionals.

This year marks the celebration of the company’s 10th anniversary. During this time completed projects have included everything from an historic Thames riverboat to an entire Cotswold village estate; state-of-the-art pool complexes to bespoke kitchen designs; the renovation of listed manor houses to quintessential Cotswold cottages; and a large family home in West London to a contemporary apartment in London’s Neo Bankside.

When beginning a new project, Pippa focuses on understanding each client’s needs. “The type of clients we work for are very successful and demand the highest standards in all that they do and they expect nothing less from us,” she explained. “They are looking for striking, original ideas, commitment, dedication, the initiative to solve any issues that may arise and a complete focus on the details of the project. Instinct is everything, rules are nothing.”

Pippa added. “Each home in The Cotswolds is unique, as is each client, which presents different creative challenges. Rules do not really apply, that is part of the enjoyment, interpreting the client’s wishes, finding the essence of each property and exploring the design potential.”

Clients can walk into their newly-renovated and interior-designed home and find everything in place. Not only will all the main interior design elements be completed to the last detail but artworks will be hung and cutlery and crockery can be sourced and placed in the kitchen. Pippa has always had a passion for fabrics, textures and colours. She was the commercial director of a large advertising agency in her early career, but found time to work on her own homes and those of her friends. Prior to setting up the business she studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, and has since tutored there. Pippa’s designs demonstrate her instinctive ability to fuse the contemporary and the classical, so clients have the best of urban chic within the traditional materials and architecture of the Cotswolds and surrounding area.

While the company is an interior design-led practice it found that its renovation project-management services grew out of genuine client demand. This is where project director Scott Paton uses his skills, drawing on his previous 20-year career as a client services director in a global advertising agency. Scott, a New Zealander, co-ordinates complex renovations, ensuring they are on budget and on deadline. He liaises on behalf of the client with contractors and cultivates all-important relationships with people living in neighbouring properties.

“We have found that clients favour this kind of service, especially when they are remote from the project and are only available at limited times. They often prefer to be involved in key decisions rather than being involved in the day-to-day and we are flexible about arranging meetings around their schedule” said Scott. “I become their point of contact and give them work-in-progress updates to keep them abreast of the project facilitating their involvement yet saving them time, effort and stress.”

Scott and Pippa have dealt with some unusual design challenges – including installing an underground eco-friendly biomass boiler in a giant bunker beneath a tennis court to prevent it spoiling the landscape within a picture-postcard Cotswold village. On a much smaller scale, one client wanted a special stainless steel post box capable of holding his Sunday papers. “Our clients have high expectations and our job is to find solutions to both large and small scale issues. It is an integral part of what we do” Scott explained.

Pippa Paton Design also specialises in the creation of bespoke kitchens and bathrooms, winning a KBB Bathroom Designer of the Year Award. One client said that her Pippa Paton kitchen was ‘an utterly brilliant design triumph’. Recognition in the Andrew Martin International Interior Design Review, and winning awards, are a great bonus, but ultimately Pippa and Scott feel the best and most satisfying reward is the reaction they get from their clients. “Another client whose property in the Cotswolds is their second home said they now love being in the house so much they are reluctant to leave it and go back to London,” said Pippa. She describes how another client recently wrote them a note of than saying; “Arriving at the house is always exciting, every room is beautiful. As I walk around I so appreciate all that you did.” That sort of comment is perhaps worth just as much as glowing recognition from experts in the industry.

Practicality fused with true beauty courses through all Pippa Paton designs. “All homes have their own purpose and function, led by the lifestyles and personalities of the people who live in them. Our designs strive to deliver an uncompromising solution to answer that purpose and function on every level. We want our clients to live effortlessly in exquisite surroundings that provide practicality, comfort, quality and beauty. We create spaces that are organic, which can evolve with time. Above all our desire is to deliver an end result that thrills and exceeds expectation.”
