Barbeque Week Celebrated on 30ft Grill

Is it the Biggest BBQ in the UK?

“We are pretty certain this is one of the biggest grills in the UK”

Cotswold restaurant The Upton Firehouse will be celebrating National Barbeque Week on what could be the biggest grill in the UK.

The 20ft grill and wood fired oven has not officially been entered into the Guinness Book of Records but can only be beaten for size according to the website in the world by one built on the Discovery Channel's BIG! television show and measures 15 ft high, 20 ft wide and 8 ft deep. After that Turkmenistan’s Darvaza Gas Crater was converted into a barbeque in 2016. A specially constructed grill the size of a football field is being placed over the mouth of the crater, creating a structure over 150 times the size of a typical family barbeque.

“We are pretty certain this is one of the biggest grills in the UK,” said Firehouse chef, Sam Edwards. “It suits us and our food style here, we are able to get smoky flavours throughout our menu on fish meat and even vegetables.”

In 1997 National BBQ Week was first launched to help change all of our attitudes towards BBQ and summer eating, but it’s also helped grow the BBQ market from just 9 million BBQ occasions back then to over 150 million in 2020, with 15 million being held over last year’s sunny Easter Holiday. This year’s celebratory week is now a fortnight due to the 25 anniversary of the first barbeque week.

The Firehouse at Upton is open for breakfasts Wednesday to Sunday 8am-11am. Pizza Night runs from 4pm- 9pm Wednesdays, Barbeque Night is 5-9pm on Friday’s while lunch is served Wednesday to Sunday 12pm-3pm.
