Interactive Exhibition That Celebrates Family-Favourite Board Games

“Is Grandad the master of the poker face? ”

Find out what kind of game player you really are as Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered exhibition, on loan from the V&A’s Museum of Childhood, comes to The Base, Greenham from Friday 25 June until Sunday 5 September.

Is Grandad the master of the poker face? Is your friend a gloating winner? Perhaps mum is a sore loser and is calling for rematch. Or is your sister a chief distractor to cheat a win? It’s time to end the debate in this interactive exhibition suitable for all ages.

Board games are played by everyone, young and old. They have a universal appeal that transcends cultural and language barriers. The playing of board games is embedded into our culture, not just the games themselves but the act of playing, the interaction with family and friends, the lessons to be learned and the fun to be had.

Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered includes hands-on activities and the chance to become part of one big interactive game while delighting in some of the most iconic, enthralling and visually striking games from the Victoria & Albert Museum’s outstanding national collection of board games. Alongside family favourites such as Cluedo, Trivial Pursuit and traditional games like chess, the exhibition will look at historical board games including The Game of the Goose and other beautifully designed games from the 18th and 19th centuries.

There is a Relaxed Day (9 Jul), where there will be reduced numbers admitted into the gallery and extra staff will be on hand to offer support to those with additional needs. Families are welcome to enjoy the exhibition at any time but on Parent and Baby Day (15 Jul) there will be additional activities for little ones to enjoy.

Whilst visiting The Base families can pick up an activity sheet and hunt for answers all over the building in a game of Clue Search. The winning entry will receive a family ticket to Wildlife Photographer of the Year 57 in 2022.
