A First Car on Finance

What Birmingham's Young Drivers Need to Know

divider

Buying your first car is exciting, but doing it in Birmingham comes with a few local catches that trip young drivers up. Between high insurance and the Clean Air Zone, the monthly finance payment is often the smallest part of the bill.

Before you set your heart on a particular model, let’s take a closer look at what actually costs you money once you're on the road.

Why the West Midlands Hits New Drivers Hard

Birmingham is one of the priciest places in the country to insure a first car. Insurance price index data for early 2026 still puts the West Midlands among the most expensive UK regions for 17 to 24-year-old cover, with newly qualified 17-year-olds in the region facing average premiums above £2,500 a year, second only to London. Even with UK-wide young-driver prices falling to a ten-year low, that's a big number before you've even paid for fuel or tax.

The city also runs a Clean Air Zone that was expanded in May 2026 to cover everything inside the outer ring road, a much bigger area than the original zone around the A4540 Middleway. It's active 24 hours a day, every day of the year, so there's no cheap time to slip through. If your car doesn't meet the standards, you pay £10 a day every time you drive in. Older diesels are usually the ones caught out, which is awkward when they're often the cheapest cars to buy.

Add Up Every Cost Before You Sign

Before comparing lenders, work out what the car will actually cost you across a year. For young drivers, getting car finance in Birmingham is only one piece of the puzzle. Insurance, fuel and CAZ compliance all have to sit comfortably next to the monthly payment. A £200 monthly payment means very little if the insurance quote comes back at £2,500.

The mistake plenty of new drivers make is financing a car they can afford the payments on, then finding they can't afford to insure it. Work out the full picture first, and get an insurance quote on the exact car before you commit to anything, not after.

If you commute along the A38 into town, or you're in and out from Solihull or Sutton Coldfield, think about how often you'll actually cross into the CAZ. At £10 a day, those charges add up fast.

Pick a Car That's Cheap to Insure and CAZ-Ready

Every car sits in an insurance group from 1 to 50. The lower the group, the cheaper it usually is to cover, so for a first car you want something near the bottom of that scale. Cars that reliably land in low groups include:

  • Hyundai i10
  • Volkswagen Up
  • Fiat Panda
  • Toyota Aygo
  • Kia Picanto

These are small, low-powered and cheap to repair, which is exactly what keeps a young driver's premium down. Just as important, check the car is CAZ-compliant so you're not stung by daily charges. Petrol cars from 2006 onwards (Euro 4) and diesels from September 2015 onwards (Euro 6) generally meet the standard, but always confirm the exact vehicle using the government's checker.

How Telematics Can Bring Your Premium Down

A telematics or black box policy prices your cover on how you actually drive instead of your age alone. For a safe young driver, that can take hundreds of pounds off the annual premium. The box keeps an eye on things like speed, braking and the time of day you're on the road.

If you avoid late-night driving and keep things smooth, the savings can be real. For a 17 or 18-year-old in Birmingham facing quotes over £2,000, that difference is often what makes a car affordable at all.

In Summary

A first car on finance can work well as long as the running costs stack up alongside the payment. In Birmingham, that means treating insurance and the Clean Air Zone as part of the deal, not an afterthought. Price the whole thing up before you sign, pick a low-group compliant car, and look hard at telematics. Do that, and you'll spend far less time worrying about money and far more time enjoying the drive.
