Experiencing Tenerife’s dramatic volcanic landscapes is almost otherworldly. Ranging from cavernous craters and striking rock formations to lush forests and rugged coastal paths beside black-sand beaches, the settings are utterly unique and as varied as they are breathtaking. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or looking to incorporate gentle walks into a beach itinerary, hiking is a peaceful way to connect to the heart of the island away from the busy tourist traps.
1. Exploring your routes
There’s no shortage of spectacular hiking trails in Europe, and the trails in Tenerife are up there with the best of them with terrain to suit every kind of hiker. The ascent to Mount Teide’s summit is unmatched if you’re up for a challenge: standing at 3,718 metres, it’s Spain’s highest peak, and the sunrise views are worth the early start and hike in the dark.
Less demanding but equally rewarding is Anaga Rural Park at the north-eastern tip of the island. The sharp peaks and deep ravines are just as striking but less demanding to explore, with a choice of trails ranging from gently sloping paths and staircases to the long descent through Masca Gorge. You’ll pass through exposed plateaus sparsely covered with cacti and tropical palms and ancient laurel forests with a fairytale feel where mist weaves between twisted trees.
2. Planning your permits
Some of the island’s best trails require permits, so when you’re exploring available Tenerife holidays check to see whether these are included or if you need to organise them independently. Hefty fines can be given if you’re found to be hiking in a restricted area without the proper authorisation.
Mount Teide’s summit – the island’s vast central volcanic crater – is the most notable example. Only 200 hikers are allowed to access the peak each day to preserve the delicate environment and ensure a serene experience. Aim to book at least two months in advance of your visit for the best chance of securing your spot as they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. 3. Deciding when to go
The best time to hike in Tenerife largely depends on the trails you want to explore. Coastal paths and lower-altitude routes are enjoyable year-round, with temperatures rarely dipping below 20°C. However, if you’re planning to tackle Mount Teide or the Anaga mountains, the cooler months from October to May offer more comfortable conditions. Summer temperatures can soar, making high-altitude hikes exhausting and potentially unsafe.
Weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains, so check the forecast before setting off. Microclimates mean you could start under clear skies and end in thick fog. Always carry layers, including a windbreaker, as temperatures drop significantly at higher elevations.
4. Preparing for your trip
Being well-prepared for all eventualities is key to you enjoying your hiking experience in Tenerife. Good hiking boots or lighter walking shoes are essential, especially on rugged paths like Masca Gorge or the volcanic terrain of Mount Teide. Walking poles can be helpful for steep ascents and descents, reducing strain on your knees. Ensure you wear sun protection at all times, even on cloudy days, as the sun is deceptively strong: this should include a hat with a brim, sunglasses and SPF for your face and any exposed parts of the body.
