Em’bark’ on a woodland adventure to celebrate Earth Day. Discover the amazing world of TREES at Nature Club at the Science Oxford Centre. Get crafty and decorate a natural wood magnet, badge, necklace or keyring to take home, and go on a tree scavenger hunt in our woodland. Trees purify our air and combat climate change – find out how they trap carbon, and what happens after they die. How can you tell which are the oldest without chopping them down? Learn some clever tree-ckery and find out! Identify your Ash from your Oak with a leaf ID guide and twig spotter, play woodland games and have a tree-mendous time.
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earthday.org including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2024 is ‘Planet vs. Plastics’.
At Nature Club, explore the natural world in different ways each month, where you will be making the most of the beautiful surroundings at the Science Oxford Centre. With ponds, woodlands and meadows, children can explore and investigate the plants and animals that live alongside us, discover the simple beauty of natural objects and learn how everything in an ecosystem is interconnected.
Coming up this spring and summer- Feel the buzz about World Bee Day (18 May) – and join Oxfordshire Beekeepers Association for a ‘hive’ of activities. Get creative and roll your own Bee-autiful beeswax candle to take home. Or, feel the love for bugs and go on a Minibeast Hunt (20 June). Grab a bug pot, use shake sheets to see what’s in the trees, and sweep nets to hunt in the meadow! Choose a habitat, then design and build a bug to live there with pipe cleaners and play dough.
