High Jinx and High Drama in the Cotswolds

“For us, it’s the thrill that anything could happen which only adds to high energy shows such as The Mikado.”

Opera Anywhere really do live up to their name. From playful pop up events to performances on punts, they relish the unusual to help bring their entertaining style of opera to a wider audience.

As they gear up for their 2019 summer season, they are putting the final touches to their programme of events which this year is bigger and better than ever before. In fact, if you draw a line across England from Herefordshire to Norfolk and look below it, you’ll find they’re touring in most of the counties underneath. Of course, you can see their Pirates of Penzance in, well… Penzance – why wouldn’t you when it’s one of their audiences’ favourites? – right across to The Mikado in Braintree, Essex and oh so many other shows in between.

Thankfully for us, you can catch all eight of their productions on their home turf of the Cotswolds at some truly delightful venues. A new stage for their Mikado this year is Tuckwell Amphitheatre in Cheltenham, a hidden gem of a place nestled within some beautiful and secluded grounds. Opera Anywhere’s founder and director Mike Woodward explains why performing outside works so well for them: “Outdoor locations can provide the most exhilarating experiences for both the performers and audiences, as the space adds an extra element of excitement often changing the atmosphere in unexpected ways. For us, it’s the thrill that anything could happen which only adds to high energy shows such as The Mikado.”

This year also sees a new collaboration for Opera Anywhere. They’ve joined forces with Cokethorpe School in Witney to create ‘The Opera Anywhere Festival at Cokethorpe’ using the school’s stunning parkland grounds and buildings as backdrop to no less than six of their shows. The festival will include three Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and their ever-popular Magic Flute.
