Command & Conquer

Beer

Hook Norton Brewery has brewed a unique beer to celebrate the life and legacy of Commander, their much-loved dray horse who passed away recently. A loyal colleague to many, and a friend to all.

The beer was brewed with the help of Head Coachman, Nick Carter and Groom Alyster.

Head Coachman, Nick Carter says: “Command and Conquer is a fitting tribute to a noble horse and friend who did exactly that. He was a loyal colleague of the brewery for the last four years of his life, a steady hand with a larger-than-life character. We’re thrilled to honour his legacy with this premium ale and keep the traditions of working horses going here at the Brewery forever.”

A donation from the sales of the beer will be made to The War Horse Memorial which honours the service of animals in war and provides a lasting legacy for animals in need.

The beer will be available in bottles and four packs in the brewery shop and online at www.hooky.co.uk. It will also be available on the bar at the brewery and at selected Hook Norton pubs.

Hook Norton Brewery remains quite unique being one of only three Breweries with working delivering Shire Horses which have remained on site since 1849. (Despite a brief spell of 40 years after the Second World War!) and last year, under a new Shire Horse team earned themselves approved centre status for the Shire Horse Society. Their passion for the Shire runs throughout the Brewery, with Managing Director, James Clarke being a trustee for the Shire Horse Society. Throughout the summer, their horses and horsebox tour the country visiting local and national shows for demonstrations and competitions.

Earlier this year, Little Clarendon Street was named one of the coolest places in the UK. The glowing report cited shops like Wild Honey and The Jericho Cheese Company, as well as community hub, Common Ground, and the now departed Wilding restaurant. Happily this prime venue has not stayed vacant for long. Kibou, the Japanese Kitchen and Bar, has opened its latest outpost in Jericho, and I went along to try out their contemporary and very stylish take on Japanese classics and street food.

I’m always wary of being reductive when it comes to Father’s Day (or Mother’s Day, for that matter) but surely a backyard barbie is peak summer ‘dad’ and the Tracklements Father’s Day Gift Box will be received with great pleasure by any foodie father or epicurean uncle.

In its 250-year history, Oxford’s Covered Market has had a rich and varied heritage. Now, in 2024, it has morphed into something of a foodie hot spot and social centre.
