GIFFORDS ON TOUR

Giffords Circus, the “magical village circus that tours south England each year” is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with Laguna Bay, set in the buoyant and sunny era of 1950s America. Audiences can expect a dazzling mix of new faces and old favourites to surprise and delight under the canvas of the iconic big top.

First launched in 2000, Giffords Circus was created by the late, great Nell Gifford (and her husband Toti). Over the past 25 years more than a million people have been charmed and thrilled by its unique, creative and dazzling – and undeniably glamorous – performances.

Cal McCrystal, the award-winning comedy director, writer and performer has been the creative force behind Giffords since 2012. Even if you don’t know his name, you will know his work: from Broadway to the West End, via Hollywood and Pinewood. Essentially, if there’s something you’ve loved watching, from the English National Opera’s Iolanthe or James Corden’s One Man, Two Guvnors to the utterly flawless Paddington films and Wonka, Cal McCrystal has probably been involved.

We were thrilled to learn more about what brings him back to Giffords year after year.

What makes Giffords different from other circuses?

Giffords is unique. We combine traditional circus with a light and witty narrative, creating a theatrical experience. We have a live orchestra and high production values with sets, costumes and lighting of West End standard. Our creative team are all leaders in their fields and totally committed to the high standards our audiences have come to expect.

Why Laguna Bay as the theme for the 25th anniversary year?

I strive each year to create a wholly different experience. For the 25th anniversary I knew we needed something particularly dazzling. In the last few years, we had made some historical shows, Irish folklore, Mexican Revolution, French Empire, Arthurian legend etc, and this year I wanted to make something bright and frivolous. I had just created a show for Caesars Palace in Atlantic City and fell in love with the New Jersey shore, where loads of 1950s Art Luxe architecture survives. The 50s gave birth to Pop Culture as we know it and I felt it would be fertile ground for making a joyful celebration of love and fun.

How important is costume, and how are these designed?

I have worked with our designer, takis, on many circus, theatre and opera productions around the world. He is extraordinarily talented and brings glamour and style to everything he does. Much of his inspiration for costumes come from Haute Couture. His designs must be robust enough for our tour, allow complete freedom of movement, and look delicate and elegant. Each performer will have particular needs, so part of takis’ job is to adjust and alter to specific requirements.

And the sets?

takis and I discuss the theme for each year and any particular demands for the set before he begins the design. The aim is to create a transformative environment that will support the story and be delightful to look at.

Does the troupe stay the same each year?

Even though our tour schedule is demanding for the team, most wish to return to Giffords. In the interest of creating a brand-new show each year we seek out fresh talent but always try to make space in future years for artistes the audience have enjoyed. There are always a few loved Giffords veterans mixed in with the new faces.

And how long have you been with Giffords?

My first show at Giffords was The Saturday Book in 2012 and I have directed every show since.

What made you decide to work with them?

I love circus and Giffords is the best. I clicked with Nell and Toti when we first met, and I knew it would be a fruitful partnership.

You’ve worked on some of the most iconic shows of recent times. What has been the greatest challenge for you in moving from (fixed) stage and screen to tent?

I work in Theatre, Opera, TV, Film and Circus. Each has particular demands and challenges. My experience across this entertainment industry influences how I approach each show. In some ways, circus is the most freeing. I create my stories for and about the performers we have that season. The troupe bring their super-human skills, and I am at liberty to add drama, laughs, thrills and beauty wherever I wish. It is a privilege and a joy to work at Giffords. It’s a very supportive and nurturing environment.

I never cease to be amazed and grateful for the love our audiences have for us. Many have been coming for decades and feel a sense of ownership and warmth. Each show is greeted with wild enthusiasm.
