Today’s film industry is nothing if not booming. New titles are announced every day, and fans around the world find something to love every day. Oxfordshire is an incredible setting for movies of all kinds. From action to fantasy and everything in between, few locales are as effective at creating movie magic. Not sold? That’s okay – let’s take a look at some of the most iconic movies and TV series filmed in Oxfordshire!
Adventure in Oxfordshire
Before we dive into the four movies and shows on our list, let’s discuss why Oxfordshire is such a popular filming location. One of the primary reasons is the area’s astounding beauty. Rich history and modern life collide in Oxfordshire, with small villages and large metropolises alike commanding attention. Just as important, however, is the sense of adventure that Oxfordshire exudes. Its natural beauty alone stirs the desire for epic tales. When paired with adventure-themed activities such as games and concerts, it’s nearly impossible to ignore the call of the Cotswolds.
A Discovery of Witches
Some of the entries on our list will be classics rather than newly released favourites, so we want to kick off the list with one of the best television shows in recent memory. Based on the book series by Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches is full of magic, mayhem and enchanting moments that kept audiences thrilled from the first stop to the last.
Did you know that this popular fantasy series was filmed right here in Oxfordshire? Locals might recognise the University of Oxford in most of the show’s episodes. Oxford wasn’t the only place where A Discovery of Witches was shot, but it was the primary location and locals might recognise a variety of local landscapes in its backdrop.
Downton Abbey
Not a fan of magic and mayhem? Perhaps historical drama series are more your style. Downton Abbey is one of the most popular series in modern history, rife with mystique and intrigue along with a beautiful collection of sets. Would you be surprised to find out that the series was largely filmed in Oxfordshire?
From its stunning costumes to its careful dedication to historical events, Downton Abbey is an incredible British show sticking close to its roots. Bampton was used as the village of Downton, with St Mary’s Church playing a prominent role. Cogges Manor Farm, located in Witney, rounds out the rest of the on-location shooting.
A Clockwork Orange
While its rather dark themes aren’t for everyone, A Clockwork Orange is an iconic and hugely influential movie. Filled with moody lighting and stark settings, the film has made a lasting impression since its release more than 50 years ago. Part of the movie’s impact comes from its vivid imagery and unforgettable sets. As you might have guessed, much of it was filmed in Oxfordshire.
A Clockwork Orange featured an iconic home that really helped build the tension and dichotomy of the film. The exterior was shot at New House in Shipton-under-Wychwood, while the interior of the building was filmed in a different location in Radlett.
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is one of the most successful films of the past decade. Much of this has to do with the movie’s emphasis on magic and bending reality, but those concepts can be difficult to project authentically. The good news is that the film had an incredibly effective set that elevated the overall story from interesting to unforgettable.
Some of the most striking imagery in Doctor Strange comes from Oxford’s Exeter College Chapel. The soaring ceilings, stonework and beautiful windows made it the perfect complement to an already impeccably shot film. Locals were thrilled to see their historical chapel featured so prominently in the film, and thousands of fans still flock to the location every year.
