Some children struggle to learn in a traditional classroom setting for one reason or another: from the fear of being bullied, not connecting with the teachers and their method of interacting with their pupils or just a lack of confidence. As a consequence, they simply do not pay attention, lose interest, become rebellious and are constantly disrupting their classmates.
There is a solution however and one that has proved effective since the early 1980’s when Margaret Sweetland, a former Headteacher living in Hampshire, wanted pupils to be able to access school quality tutors in their own homes. Margaret was aware of the impact that a good tutor can have on each student, including those pupils with special educational needs and social, emotional and mental health difficulties. She set about establishing Home-School Tutoring UK covering the Hampshire area. By 1984 home school tutoring was proving so successful that the business Associate model was launched, enabling teachers to own and run their individual businesses. All involved share the same passion to help the families they work with and there is nothing more rewarding than watching students achieve their goals with their help and guidance.
The key to Home-School Tutoring’s success is the patient and supportive tuition that children receive on a 1:1 basis with their tutors. Children are encouraged to overcome their difficulties, achieving greater outcomes with enjoyable, pressure-free tuition undertaken in an environment where they feel safe. A rigorous registration process ensures that all Home-School Tutors are suitably qualified and committed to delivering effective and engaging tuition covering all subjects at all levels including several languages including Russian and Chinese. All tutors are qualified with enhanced DBS registration and are fully insured.
Carolyn Watson has been involved with HST since 2009 when she joined the Oxfordshire area team as an Assistant to the then Area Advisor. Over time she became familiar with the working model of the business and made connections with their registered tutors. After a few years, Carolyn took over the business as the Area Director (Home-School Tutoring Oxfordshire), expanding it to cover West Berkshire; both areas became amalgamated in 2016 to create Home-School Tutoring Oxfordshire and West Berkshire Ltd.
“After struggling in classrooms, our tutors have helped students resolve the problems and worries that cause them anxiety by working at each student’s pace in their own familiar and comfortable surroundings,” says Carolyn. “We have seen GCSEs, A Levels and entrance exams faced with confidence and students celebrating when they achieve the grades they were striving for. Best of all, our students are all able to enjoy learning again.”
This is one of many first-class testimonials which have been posted about Home-School Tutoring in the Oxfordshire area:
“Our granddaughter was both demoralised and defiant. After her being out of school for four months, I contacted Carolyn Watson from Home-School Tutoring Oxfordshire and West Berkshire, a professional Associate business that had been recommended to me, for help. Carolyn was both understanding and helpful and has stayed connected throughout. Only a few days later we met the tutor who immediately impressed us with his calm, gentle and encouraging manner. He gave his pupil a thorough assessment that very evening and arranged a programme of lessons which began the following week. All has gone well ever since. He has established a real rapport with our granddaughter who has thrived on his inspirational one to one teaching. Her attitude to learning has undergone a real transformation and she is studying Maths and all three Sciences. After just three months, she is ready to return to mainstream education but wants to continue working with her tutor. I cannot thank or praise him enough for his part in her progress.”
