Royal Voluntary Service

Why not be part of making sure that older people where you live get the support they need and want?
Anyone can volunteer with Royal Voluntary Service as long as you are over 14. It doesn’t matter how much time you have to spare or what skills you have

Royal Voluntary Service is a national volunteering organisation and a charity with its roots in local communities all over Britain. Our volunteers aim to provide the kinds of support an older person might need at home, in their neighbourhoods and also in hospitals.

More than 35,000 dedicated community volunteers deliver services that help older people live the life they want to. They make a massive difference within their communities and are committed to helping older people live independent and fulfilled lives. Whether it’s taking an older person to the shops, delivering a meal to them, helping with activities, working in our cafe or even walking their dog – you can make a big difference that is appreciated and valued.

Every year Royal Voluntary Service delivers two million meals, undertakes around 90,000 journeys to hospital and GP appointments, to the shops or into town and delivers 134,000 books through our 400 Books on Wheels services. We have approximately 450 community centres and lunch clubs, 50 community transport schemes and over 500 cafés, shops and trolley services in hospitals.

Tailored support

We do not believe in a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to helping older people. We recognise that everyone’s needs are different and that everyone will have different ideas about what will make life happier or easier.

However, not many people know that they can contact their local Royal Voluntary Service and discuss this personalised approach, either for themselves or for an older person in their family.

We do our best to provide the help or support you need, but if we can’t help your specific situation, we will try our best to direct you to a trusted local organisation that can.

A service that grows with you

Because Royal Voluntary Service is all about relationships – between older people, their families, our volunteers and our staff – we listen to what you have to say about the work we do. We want our services to develop to meet real local needs, and we can only do that by building partnerships with those we work with.

In many ways the future of your local Royal Voluntary Service is in your hands. Whether you are a volunteer, an older person or related to an older person who needs some support, we urge you to get involved and help shape the way older people are served in your community.

Each month Royal Voluntary Service helps 100,000 people to stay independent in their own homes. We offer practical help that can make all the difference – whether it's getting a lift somewhere, collecting something like a library book or shopping, or providing friendly company to break up the day. We also offer social activities, patient and community support.

In all, the support we offer is personal, practical and preventative: it is designed to allow older people to live independent and fulfilled lives.

Our volunteers have been DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked and all carry identification so you can be sure they're genuine.

What’s happening in Oxfordshire?

We have Darby and Joan clubs, Day Centres, Good Neighbours, Telephone Befriending, Transport, a Community Centre, Lunch Clubs, and Home Library Services. Lots of diverse opportunities!

We are in the process of setting up a Good Neighbours service in Oxford City, we will be launching in the autumn. This project is in conjunction with LinkAges, a charity who work with Oxford University to find volunteer placements for students. This is a great opportunity to join us on the ground with this worthwhile service.

Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to help older people in your local community, grow your self-esteem and confidence, gain a new purpose, gain an impressive and positive plus to your CV and it’s fun and sociable!

Whether you can spare a few hours once a week or fortnight or can give a couple of days each month we will have an opportunity for you.

Why not be part of making sure that older people where you live get the support they need and want.
