Five Betting Market Types and How They Work

divider

Most punters stick to one or two market types and never look at the rest. That's fine if you're betting for fun, but if you want to understand where value sits across a betting platform, knowing how each market works gives you options. After you login Onjabet site or open any betting platform with a full market selection, you'll notice dozens of tabs per event. Most of those tabs are variations of five core market types, and once you understand the five, everything else is a spin-off.

1. Match Result Markets Are the Starting Point

This is where most people begin. Pick who wins. Two-way in sports without draws, three-way in football. The odds reflect probability, and because everyone bets on match result, the margins tend to be tighter than in other markets. Easy to understand. You pick a winner, you get paid if they win. But if you only ever bet match result, you're competing for value in the most crowded space on the board.

2. Over/Under Markets Let You Ignore Who Wins

Total goals, total points, total sets. Over/under markets ignore the result entirely. The only question is volume. You pick a line and bet on the combined score going over or under that number.

You can have a strong opinion about the style of a match without needing to predict the winner. Two defensive teams with low recent scoring records playing on a rainy evening? You don't need to guess which one edges it. You bet the under and let the game play out.

Lines typically sit at 2.5 for football, though bookmakers adjust based on the matchup. Some platforms offer half-goal and quarter-goal lines that reduce the chance of a push. If you bet over 2.25, half your stake goes on over 2 and half on over 2.5. Sounds complicated the first time but it gives you more precise positioning.

3. Handicap Betting Levels the Playing Field

When one side is a heavy favourite, the match result market doesn't offer much to work with. A team priced at 1.10 to win pays so little that punters look elsewhere for better returns. Handicap markets solve that by applying a virtual deficit or advantage before kickoff.

If the favourite starts at -1.5, they need to win by two or more for your bet to pay. A +1.5 line on the other side means you collect even if they lose by one. Asian handicaps eliminate the draw entirely and refund your stake on exact margins depending on the line. The European version works differently because it keeps the draw as a third outcome you can bet on.

Handicap betting rewards punters who have opinions about margins, not just outcomes. You might feel confident a team wins but less sure about them covering a two-goal spread. That kind of precision pays better than picking a winner at 1.10.

4. Prop Bets Focus on What Happens Inside the Match

First goalscorer, total corners, cards shown, player shots on target. Prop bets break a match into individual events and let you bet on each one separately. Fewer people bet on these markets, so the odds tend to be softer than in the main ones.

Props are harder to research though. You need to know player tendencies, not just team form. A striker who takes five shots per match but only puts two on target is a different prop bet than one who takes two but hits the frame every time. If you follow a league closely enough to know which centre-back picks up the most yellows or which winger takes more corners than anyone else on the pitch, props are probably where you should be spending your time.

Bookmakers tend to price prop bets with wider margins because the volume is lower and the data is harder to model precisely. That cuts both ways. The odds can be more generous, but being selective matters. One or two well-researched props on a match you know inside out will serve you better than spreading ten bets across events you haven't looked at properly.

5. Outright and Futures Markets Pay for Patience

Season winner, tournament champion, top scorer, relegation. Outright markets open before a season starts and stay active throughout. The odds shift as results come in.

The timing is everything here. A few weeks into a season, early form reveals things the pre-season odds didn't account for. A team that won their first four matches might still be available at generous odds because the bookmaker hasn't fully adjusted yet. That window closes fast. Jump in during week one and the data is thin. By week ten the bookmaker has already adjusted and the generous prices are gone.

Futures also commit your stake for months, which is worth keeping in mind. If you put money on a league winner in August, that bet stays open until May. Planning ahead with your bankroll makes the difference between a smart futures bet and one you forget about.
