Five Skincare Ingredients You Need to Know About

The most effective skincare is designed to target specific concerns with impressive precision. While skincare trends come and go, science remains remarkably consistent: peptides strengthen, acids refine, retinal renews, ceramides protect and chitosan supports recovery. Understanding this can help cut through the noise of viral trends and marketing waffle because smart skincare isn’t built around hype – it’s built around evidence.

THE REFINER: AHAs

Modern acid formulations are widely used in skincare to help improve texture, reduce congestion and help stimulate cellular renewal. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), work on the skin's surface to dissolve dead skin cells and encourage cellular turnover, revealing brighter, smoother skin. In terms of molecular size, the smallest is glycolic acid which helps clear dead cells from the surface of the skin but also penetrates deeply enough to stimulate collagen production within. Acid-based skincare can create an ideal foundation for other products in your routine. Start off by using once or twice weekly and then build up as your skin acclimatises to regular use.

We love: The Triple Exfoliant, new from luxury French skincare brand PERS, pairs AHAs (including 5% glycolic acid) with both enzymatic and mechanical exfoliants: a triple threat to repair and regenerate dull, claggy skin. They’ve also added in a generous 5% niacinamide and 2% antioxidant complex to ensure that the renewed skin is soothed and the barrier remains robust. Recommended for nighttime use when the skin is naturally in its repair cycle, either as a scrub or a mask treatment. Suitable for all skin types, and available in the UK from 5 October, pers-skincare.com.

THE STRENGTH TRAINER: PEPTIDES

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks for essential proteins like collagen, elastin and keratin. In simpler terms, if collagen is the scaffolding that keeps skin firm, peptides are the personal trainers encouraging it to stay motivated. They act as chemical messengers to signal to the skin that more structural proteins are needed. They tend to be well tolerated by most skin types and, while they won’t give instant results, they are one of the most effective ingredients for supporting long-term skin health. Used consistently they’ve been proven to strengthen the skin’s structure, making it appear smoother, firmer and more supple.

We love: Over 25 years of experience working with skin inspired beauty therapist Clare Townley to launch LeClair Skincare, a range of products seeking to support collagen renewal, reinforce the skin’s natural barrier, and improve overall radiance. Formulations combine peptides with antioxidant-rich vitamins plus nourishing botanicals to create a spa-scented collection which feels gratifyingly indulgent to use but carries the reassurance of a science-led approach, leclairskincare.co.uk

THE PROTECTOR: CERAMIDES

Healthy skin comes from the integrity of the skin barrier, and this is where ceramides come into their own. Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids (fats) that make up a significant portion of the skin's protective barrier; they’re like the mortar between the bricks of your skin cells, helping to seal in moisture, prevent water loss and protect against environmental stressors. They are also extremely versatile and work beautifully alongside most other ingredients – in fact, pairing ceramides with more potent actives often helps minimise irritation while maximising results.

We love: The neck and décolletage are particularly delicate due to thinner skin, frequent sun exposure and less oil gland density. By replenishing lost lipids and strengthening the skin barrier, ceramides help maintain hydration and improve overall skin resilience, and in The Inkey List Bio-Active Ceramide Neck Stick they come into their own. Applied in upward sweeps, the solid stick format also acts as mini gua sha massage device, uk.theinkeylist.com.

THE GOLD STANDARD: RETINAL

Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives including retinyl palmitate, retinol, retinal and tretinoin) remain the gold standard in both blemish control and enhancing skin longevity – and retinal is quickly becoming the industry's favourite form, due to the fact it can be used without a prescription, and it’s speedy. Retinal (with an a) works in the same way as all retinoids, by accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen production, but it’s around 10 times faster than retinol (with an o). It can deliver healthier skin with a smoother texture, reduced fine lines and fewer breakouts, so for those seeking a single ingredient which delivers visible results, retinal sets the benchmark. The key to success is consistency but, as with acids, you must start slowly; apply two or three times a week before gradually increasing frequency as your skin adapts. And because retinal can increase sun sensitivity, daily SPF is absolutely essential.

We love: K-Beauty brand Celimax went viral earlier this year with the Retinal Dual Shot Tightening Cream. The – all natural – colours of its two key actives (bright yellow retinal and a bright blue blend of soothing azulene and panthenol) combine to give the look of a striped toothpaste, but this cream is more than a meme… it’s an absolute powerhouse containing tiny spicules (ultra-fine microparticles that act as a liquid form of microneedling) to deliver active ingredients deep into the pores and enhance absorption.Their latest innovation is the Retinal Shot Tightening Booster with double the retinal concentration (0.1%) for more intense, targeted treatment. This is serious skincare at a fabulous price. Celimax is widely available online (including amazon.co.uk) and coming to Boots later this year.

THE BARRIER SHIELD: CHITOSAN

Derived from chitin – a naturally occurring polysaccharide – chitosan can act as both a hydrator and a protector due to its ability to create a breathable protective layer on the skin, helping to lock in moisture and thereby support barrier function. Moreover, its biocompatibility makes it suitable for sensitive or compromised skin, and it is also prized for its wound-healing, antimicrobial and skin-repair properties. It has shown potential in supporting tissue regeneration and calming inflammation, making it particularly useful for treating sensitive, stressed or post-treatment skin.

We love: Biotech skincare brand ChitoCare use sustainably derived chitosan sourced from Icelandic waters to target a range of concerns and conditions, centring around hydration and barrier repair and including pre-and-post aesthetic treatment products. Their Anti-Aging Night Cream applies as an enveloping layer that nourishes the skin overnight leaving it replenished and noticeably softer by morning. Think of it as the cashmere blanket, if you like. A light and luxurious additional layer that keeps you protected while you sleep, chitocare.com.
