JJ Building: “It's the Passion”

Looking for a reliable and trustworthy builder to carry out home improvements and renovations for your 'des res' can be a bit of a lottery. We met up with Jason Jones – a local builder – a couple of weeks ago, to find out exactly what it takes to earn a good reputation in the building trade.

“I think first and foremost, apart from having the necessary training, skills and expertise it's the passion for the work and the job you are undertaking that sets you apart from the crowd. I still get as much buzz from the job I am currently working on as I did from my very first job, over twenty years ago. Renovations, restorations and modifications are my specialities. I really try to tailor everything to my client's needs. I will always meet with a client to discuss exactly what they are looking to achieve with the work, and fully understand their budget and ideal time frame. I really like to work with my customers to make their ideas reality, no matter, in some cases, how extreme.”

Jason will always lead every project and is always on hand. “I just love the work” he enthuses. “I get such satisfaction from seeing everything come to fruition”.

As well as working in the domestic field, Jason and his team also carry out commercial work and renovations. “We recently renovated Deacon's jewellers in Swindon, which was a great project. We did all the building work and also converted the basement. The whole project took over a year to complete.

No job is too big or small in my eyes, from plastering a small fireplace to renovating an entire house, we just step up to the mark. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and reliability. My most recent project, which we are literally just finishing, is a Victorian cottage that we have renovated from top to bottom. The project will probably have taken about four months once complete. We've repaired the chimney, put in new sash windows, re-plastered, re-wired and laid new floors. I always use the same contractors, who have been working with me for years, so I am confident that all aspects of our work are outstanding.

We offer flexible working hours and will do our utmost to work within budgets and time restraints too. We are proud to be able to provide the highest standard and quality of work with our bespoke, tailored building service.”

When artist Julia Sorrell contacted me to see if I thought our readers might be interested in the story of how she and husband, Ian, renovated their property in Shipton-under-Wychwood, I jumped at the chance to learn more. Their aim was to use as many recycled materials as possible, and they will be opening their home to visitors during Oxfordshire Artweeks in May.

It’s no surprise to see carpet trending once again. With spiralling energy costs we’re all trying to find ways of making our homes feel cosy without turning up the thermostat. Wall to wall carpet has become an increasingly popular choice and we’ve also seen an uptick in deep pile rugs, both of which offer warmth, comfort and a little under-foot luxury and can help to insulate our homes.

There are a wide selection of what we refer to as ‘ornamental’ grasses to choose from with handsome foliage in a variety of colours, some turning autumnal shades when the temperatures fall.
