How to cope with grief while funeral planning

divider

Losing someone close is never easy. During this challenging time, you might be faced with both the emotional impact of loss and the practical responsibilities of arranging a funeral. Balancing these aspects is tough, but taking small, thoughtful steps can help you navigate this difficult period while honouring your loved one’s memory.

Prioritising self-compassion and emotional health

Grief takes a toll on your wellbeing, often leaving you feeling drained and vulnerable. It’s essential to be gentle with yourself during this time. Recognise that grief doesn’t follow a clear path, and it can resurface unexpectedly.

Allow yourself to feel your emotions without judgment. You might experience moments of anger, sadness, or even relief – these are all valid parts of the grieving process. Take time to pause, breathe and reflect when you need to. If you feel overwhelmed, give yourself permission to rest or seek solace in quiet moments.

Sometimes, you need a bit of self-compassion to help you build the emotional strength to get on with things.

Asking for and accepting help

You might think that it’s up to you to carry the burden of funeral arrangements alone, but there’s no shame in leaning on others. Friends, family and professionals can support you in ways that lighten your load. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it, whether it’s sorting through funeral plans or simply having someone to talk to.

Many people in your life will want to support you, but they may not know how. Be specific in what you need, whether it’s someone to assist with logistics or someone to simply keep you company. Trusting others with responsibilities can help ease the overwhelming weight of grief.

Focusing on your loved one's wishes

When planning the funeral, remembering your loved one’s preferences and values can provide a sense of comfort amidst the pain. Reflect on what they would have wanted – whether it’s a quiet, intimate ceremony or a more public gathering. Sometimes, focusing on their wishes can provide direction when you feel lost or uncertain.

If they had already made some funeral plans, honouring those choices can make the process feel less daunting. Where possible, involve others who knew them well to make sure the service reflects their spirit. This helps create a meaningful and personal goodbye.

Preparing for grief triggers

There are always moments of grief that may be difficult to anticipate. Certain tasks, like choosing music or writing a eulogy, can stir emotions tied to memories of your loved one. These triggers can be unexpectedly intense. Instead of avoiding them, prepare yourself for these emotional moments.

Break tasks down into smaller steps, and give yourself space to process your feelings between them. When emotions rise, allow yourself to step back and rest. This might help to prevent burnout and emotional exhaustion.

Looking after yourself physically

During a time of grief, physical self-care often gets pushed aside. But taking care of your body is just as important as caring for your emotions. Grief can affect your sleep, appetite and energy levels, so try to maintain a routine, even if it feels difficult.

Eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water, and aim for some light physical activity, such as a short walk. Regular rest is crucial too – your body needs time to recover from the emotional strain. Hopefully, you’ll build some resilience to face the challenges of the grieving process ahead.
