You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better-dressed crowd than at a British racecourse. Style has become inseparable from the action on the track, as punters don their best dresses and suits for the occasion.
Picking out an outfit is as big a part of preparing for a day at the races as checking the full racing results, which will help guide those looking to place wagers. Specific events will often have guidelines on what everyone is permitted to wear, making research prior to booking tickets essential.
In July, there are several upcoming events in the Flat season calendar that are worth attending. For those tempted to head to one of the following trio, here’s what you need to know about the summer dress code.
July Festival, Newmarket, 9th - 11th July
British horse racing returns to its headquarters in early July for three days of racing at Newmarket. Unlike the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, which take place on the Rowley Mile Course in May, the July Course hosts the three-day summer festival, as attendees enjoy the sunshine and are treated to elite racing and entertainment.
With the Best Turned Out awards celebrating the most stylishly dressed and with prizes up for grabs, picking out the right outfit can be rewarding here. But Newmarket’s dress codes aren’t as strict as other events, with organisers emphasising the idea of blending style with comfort. Women will typically don colourful midi and maxi dresses, adding stylish hats and heels as the final touches, while a suit and smart shoes are advised for men.
King George Weekend, Ascot, 24th - 25th July
It was only a few short weeks ago when crowds were heading over to Berkshire for Royal Ascot, but they are set to return at the end of July for the King George Weekend. Unlike the Gold Cup, though, a top hat and tails are not necessary for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
In the Queen Anne and Winning Post Enclosure, there is no formal dress code for the race. Instead, guests are simply asked to dress smartly, with most men wearing a buttoned shirt, blazer, and smart trousers, while women are encouraged to wear their summer best.
In the King Edward VII Enclosure, though, gentlemen need to wear a jacket, collared shirt, and either a tie or a cravat. Women are expected to wear a dress, suit, or jumpsuit with a hat or headpiece, meaning that those attending can still have plenty of flexibility over what to wear. Footwear is once again expected to be smart, with trainers forbidden from the course.
Goodwood Festival, Goodwood, 28th July - 1st August
‘Glorious Goodwood’ caps off July racing this summer with five days of action on the South Downs. Several Group 1 races, including the Sussex Stakes, make it a big attraction for racing fans and casual racegoers, as does the accessibility offered to attendees regarding dress code.
Like Ascot, Goodwood’s requirements differ depending on where you are on the course. The Richmond Enclosure and hospitality boxes demand a suit jacket, a long-sleeved collared shirt, a tie, and full-length trousers for gentlemen, while women are free to wear elegant dresses, jumpsuits, or smart tops and tailored trousers.
However, the rules are more relaxed in the Gordon Enclosure and Lennox Enclosure. While midi and maxi dresses, along with tailored trousers and blazers, are permitted in the former, the latter is the most casual and allows for outfits more akin to a picnic in the park.
